BACKED BY RESEARCH

Why it works, not just why we like it.

A few findings from published research on coloring and puzzle activities — described in general terms below, in our own words.

Calmer mind, sharper focus

In two controlled studies with adults, twenty minutes of coloring was linked to lower anxiety and better performance on attention and creative-thinking tasks compared with a non-coloring control.

Holt, Furbert & Sweetingham (2019), Art Therapy Journal

More than a pastime

A 2023 survey of 156 older adults found that regularly working on puzzles was linked to both stronger cognitive engagement and better emotional and social wellbeing.

These findings describe coloring and puzzle activities in general in published research — they were not conducted using Alex Herek books specifically, and our books are not marketed as therapeutic or medical products.
